How to give the immune system a second youth, scientists explained

The highest activity of the thymus is observed in the first three years of life. During puberty, its functions begin to decline, and after the age of 40, the gland loses almost all of its capabilities, having exhausted its accumulated reserve. These reserves deplete quickly, making it difficult for the elderly body to cope with threats.

In the course of the study, American scientists sought an alternative source for the production of T-lymphocytes. They focused on the potential of the liver.

Experiments on mice revealed three important proteins capable of synthesizing T-cells, but over time they lose this ability. Using modern mRNA therapy techniques, researchers introduced these proteins into the livers of elderly animals to activate T-cell production.

The results were promising: the test rodents showed an increase in both the quantity and diversity of T-lymphocytes. An improved response to vaccination was also noted, allowing the body to more effectively combat cancer tumors. Thus, it was possible to demonstrate rejuvenation of the immune system and activation of its functions.
