The Ombudsman Institute is concerned: among children in the republic, oncology is on the rise

The increase in the number of cases of refusal of treatment is observed among parents and relatives of children

At a meeting of the Ombudsman Institute staff with doctors from the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, alarming information about oncological diseases in children in Kyrgyzstan was revealed.

As of the end of 2025, about 60 young patients were receiving treatment at the center. Doctors noted that the number of new cases is increasing every year: if in 2014 there were 70 new cases registered, by 2023 this number has already exceeded 200.

“The most common diagnoses include acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors, as well as neuroblastomas and nephroblastomas. The rise in morbidity is associated both with a real increase in the number of cases and with improved diagnostics,” the specialists from the institute explained.

In addition, doctors also pointed out the growing number of cases of refusal of treatment among parents.

“Many citizens do not trust medical institutions and face financial difficulties. For religious reasons, they prefer to turn to mullahs and folk healers. For example, there was a case where parents took their child with leukemia after remission for treatment with unconventional methods. A year later, the disease returned, and the child passed away,” the doctors shared their observations with human rights defenders.
