A new fee has been introduced in Rome for access to the Trevi Fountain, where tourists usually throw coins, as reported by Meduza.
From 9:00 AM to 10:00 PM, there will be a charge of two euros to approach the fountain. However, children under five years old, residents of Rome, and people with disabilities will be exempt from this fee. During nighttime and early morning, access to the fountain will be free of charge.
According to local authorities, ticket sales could generate between 6.5 to 20 million euros per year, which is planned to be used for the maintenance of the fountain and the salaries of the workers.
The coins that tourists continue to throw into the fountain will be donated to the charity organization Caritas di Roma, which helps those in need. Approximately 1.5 million euros worth of coins are extracted from the fountain each year.
