At a meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, Deputy Gulnara Akimbaeva appealed to the government for assistance for Kyrgyz citizens who participated in the cleanup of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986.

She emphasized that more than 4,000 people were sent from Kyrgyzstan to the sites of work to eliminate the consequences of the catastrophe.

“This tragedy occurred on April 26, and this year we mark the 40th anniversary of the disaster. Our citizens who participated in the cleanup suffered from radiation. Currently, only 800 of them remain, many of whom have disabilities,” the deputy noted.

Akimbaeva also called on the responsible government agencies to organize commemorative events in April and provide necessary social support to Chernobyl survivors and their families.

In addition, she expressed the need to assist Kyrgyz citizens who participated in military actions in Afghanistan.
