As reported by The Wall Street Journal, the administration of Donald Trump is considering lifting the bans on international humanitarian aid for North Korea.

This concerns the unlocking of exceptions in the sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council Committee against the DPRK. In recent months, the United States has suspended the issuance of permits, fearing that humanitarian supplies could be misused. However, according to the publication, Washington plans to lift these restrictions, allowing international aid to resume.

The reasons for this decision are linked to the deepening ties between Kim Jong Un and Russia and China. Nevertheless, the newspaper notes that restoring approval for humanitarian aid does not necessarily improve interactions between Pyongyang and Washington.

According to WSJ data, Kim Jong Un has shown little interest in negotiations with the U.S. or South Korea in recent years, despite Trump’s initiatives and the elections in South Korea, where Lee Jae-myung, who advocates for improved inter-Korean relations, became president.

It is important to note that in 2024, North Korea refused international aid after catastrophic floods left thousands of people homeless.
