In the Jeti-Oguz district, in the village of Ak-Shyyrak, an incident occurred involving a snow leopard attacking livestock. The information was provided by the village head, Mars Berikbaev, in a conversation with a Turmush correspondent.

The event took place on January 29 at the Kara-Tai pasture, located near the Üch-Koshkon area. The snow leopard entered a pen belonging to local resident Ulan Bakyt uulu and attacked a goat, biting it. The resident, noticing the predator, tried to scare it away using a handheld flashlight.

Later, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision of the Kyrgyz Republic noted that the snow leopard was likely old and unable to bite and carry off its prey adequately, which may be related to a decline in its hunting skills.

According to the owner, this animal occasionally visits the village, and traces of its presence are found nearby the yards. This time, the leopard headed towards the Teski pasture.

The ministry urged local residents to exercise caution when encountering wild animals, to follow safety measures, and to promptly report such situations to the relevant authorities.

Earlier, Turmush reported that in June 2025, an unknown predator attacked sheep in the Chym-Tam pasture in the Jeti-Oguz district, resulting in the death of over 300 head of livestock.

According to information from the presidential representative's office in the Issyk-Kul region, on June 11, an attack occurred on a flock of sheep in the high-altitude Chym-Tam pasture. As a result, 30 sheep were injured, and the others died in a stampede, leading to a total loss of 332 head.

All deceased animals were disposed of in accordance with sanitary regulations.

The presidential office noted that information regarding the attack being carried out by a leopard has not yet been confirmed. “Measures are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The Jeti-Oguz district administration is conducting awareness-raising work among shepherds in the Chym-Tam pasture regarding safety and prevention,” the regional authorities reported.

Turmush also mentioned that in the mountains of the Jeti-Oguz district, a predator attacked a large flock of sheep at night.

According to preliminary data, in the Chym-Tam pasture in the upper reaches of the village of Barskoon, an unknown predator entered the pen where small livestock was kept.

Livestock farmer Maksat Amazbaev, residing in the village of Barskoon, reported that on the night of June 10 to 11, 2025, between 4:00 and 5:00 AM, the predator entered the pen near the settlement. As a result of the attack, 332 head of sheep and goats belonging to Maksat Amazbaev and Taalai Junushov were harmed. “There were marks from four teeth on the necks of the sheep. We suspect it was a leopard,” added Amazbaev.

The Chym-Tam pasture is approximately 150 km from the village of Barskoon.

Two days later, on June 13, the same predator attacked again, this time targeting a cow with a calf, witnessed by local livestock farmers.

They reported that when they came to check the pen, they found that about 15-20 sheep were still alive. The others, in their opinion, died as a result of the attack or in the panic-induced stampede.

According to the livestock farmers, the predator bit off a significant portion of the body of two sheep.

As a result, 332 head of small livestock were disposed of in a special pit.

The affected livestock farmers expressed serious concerns: “The snow leopard is listed in the Red Book, and we do not know how to protect our livestock,” they said with worry.

In their opinion, similar attacks could happen again, and they are asking for help. Local residents believe that this issue requires attention from the authorities and environmental organizations.
