In Bishkek, the construction of over 20 underground pedestrian crossings is planned. This became known through a podcast by the "Kabar" agency, in which the city's mayor, Aibek Junushaliev, spoke.
The mayor reported that initially, it was planned to build three overground crossings on Chyngyz Aitmatov Avenue (Southern Highway), but this project was rejected after receiving negative feedback from citizens.
"Local residents expressed concerns that large overground structures would overshadow the picturesque views of the mountains. We are actively working to eliminate hanging wires to improve the city's appearance. The construction of high crossings, such as those on Chyngyz Aitmatov Avenue, could spoil the panorama. Therefore, we listened to the citizens' opinions and chose the underground option," he explained.
According to Aibek Junushaliev, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, the country lacked experience in building underground crossings. To address this challenge, the city hall studied various methods and settled on modern block technology. The first four crossings cost the city budget between 32-34 million soms.
According to the information, the structures are assembled from pre-prepared blocks that are delivered and installed on site. The first of these crossings has been successfully completed.
