In an interview published on Facebook, Klara Sooronkulova, a former judge of the Constitutional Court, expressed her opinion that the constitutional reform of 2021 significantly changed the status and powers of the president. She believes that these changes may affect the procedure for conducting presidential elections and the possibility of re-nominating the current president.
According to her, the president was elected in January 2021, while the latest version of the Constitution was approved in a national referendum on April 11, 2021. Thus, the elections were held under the old rules, and changes to the Fundamental Law were made only two months later.
Sooronkulova emphasizes that after the adoption of the new version of the Constitution, in her view, it would be logical to hold new presidential elections, as the powers and status of the president have changed. At the same time, she noted that it is not necessary to wait for the end of the term, as the new Constitution allows the president to run for the next term without any obstacles.
