In the Kyrgyz Republic, efforts to reduce the number of illegal landfills continue. This was reported by Mederbek Mashiev, the Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, at a recent meeting dedicated to issues of agricultural policy, water resources, and ecology.

The minister emphasized that an administrative-territorial reform is currently underway in the country.

“Before the reform, there were 411 illegal landfills in Kyrgyzstan. After the changes, their number has decreased to 290. For comparison, in Uzbekistan, where the population is 40 million, there are only 120 landfill sites. We are also working on consolidating landfills across the country. A special regulation has been developed and is already handed over to local authorities for implementation,” he noted.

Deputy Erkayim Seyitkazieva drew attention to the problem of the landfill in the village of Gagarin in the Issyk-Ata district.

“Summer is a time of constant burning, and local residents, as well as those from Kant, suffer from smog. It is necessary to build a waste sorting facility here,” she added.

Mashiev also reported on ongoing cooperation with international organizations.

“A waste processing plant has started operating in Bishkek. We are considering the possibility of increasing its capacity to be able to process waste from landfills in the Chui region,” the minister concluded.
