At the Global Summit on Sustainable Development Goals, Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan, called for the recognition of mountain regions as a priority in global climate policy.

He emphasized the importance of increasing attention to mountain ecosystems within the international climate agenda, noting their vulnerability to climate change.

According to Torobaev, issues such as glacier melting, changes in precipitation patterns, and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events pose long-term threats to water resources, agriculture, and energy systems both in Central Asia and beyond.

Kyrgyzstan also advocates for mountain countries and regions to be considered special zones for sustainable development, providing them with priority access to climate financing, adaptation technologies, and monitoring systems.

Torobaev added that the resilience of mountain areas has a direct impact on the water and food security of millions of people, which requires coordinated and comprehensive solutions at the international level.
