President of the United States, Donald Trump, initiated discussions on a new agreement that is set to replace the expired Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, which lapsed on February 5. He announced this on his platform, Truth Social.

According to Trump, during his first term, he completed a full modernization of the U.S. armed forces, including both new and upgraded nuclear arsenals.

“I prevented nuclear conflicts between Pakistan and India, Iran and Israel, as well as Russia and Ukraine. Instead of extending the 'New START Treaty,' which was poorly negotiated on the American side and is now significantly violated, we should task our nuclear experts with developing a new, more effective, and modern treaty capable of ensuring long-term cooperation,” he wrote.

The New START Treaty, signed in 2010, was in effect for ten years and was extended until February 5, 2026. It limited the number of deployed nuclear warheads to 1,550 and included mechanisms for mutual inspections and notifications. With the expiration of the treaty, these procedures will cease.
