The term of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty between the USA and Russia has expired, and Donald Trump is aiming to involve China in new negotiations, according to information from Kazinform.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump noted that instead of extending the "New START Treaty" — an agreement considered poorly coordinated and violated — nuclear experts should be tasked with developing an improved and modernized treaty capable of lasting in the long term.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized on Wednesday that any new arms control treaty must include China, despite its nuclear arsenal being significantly smaller than that of the USA and Russia, as reported by ABC News.
"The President has repeatedly emphasized that effective arms control in the 21st century cannot be achieved without China's participation, given its growing and significant stockpile of nuclear weapons," added Marco Rubio.
However, a representative of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, stated that the country does not plan to participate in a trilateral agreement.
"The nuclear arsenals of China and the USA are at different levels, and at this moment it would be unfair and unreasonable to demand China's participation in nuclear disarmament negotiations," commented Lin Jian.
