Iranian Nobel laureate sentenced to 7.5 years in prison in her homeland

The court ruled a 6-year sentence for "participation in gatherings and conspiracy to commit crimes," as well as 1.5 years for propaganda. In addition, after her release, she will be prohibited from leaving the country for two years, and she must spend another two years in the city of Khusf.

Narges Mohammadi was arrested on December 12, 2025, during memorial services for human rights defender Hosrow Alikordi. On February 2, she announced a hunger strike, and, as reported by Nili, a few days before the sentencing, she was hospitalized due to a deterioration in her health but was soon returned to prison. Her lawyer hopes that the human rights activist can be temporarily released on bail for treatment, considering her condition.

Narges Mohammadi holds the position of Vice President of the Center for Human Rights Defenders of Iran. Over the past two decades, she has been repeatedly arrested for her human rights and journalistic activities, as well as for criticizing the authorities. She has been detained a total of 13 times.

With the new sentence, her total prison term amounts to 31 years, of which she has already spent about 10 years in prison. In 2021, she was sentenced to 2.5 years and 80 lashes for "anti-state propaganda." In December 2024, she was temporarily released due to health reasons.

Supporters of Mohammadi report that during her imprisonment, she suffered several heart attacks, and in 2022, she underwent emergency surgery. At the end of 2024, a bone formation was discovered, which was subsequently removed.
