In this scientific article, epibatidine is described as a powerful non-narcotic analgesic; however, its high toxicity makes its use unsafe.
After Navalny's death in February 2024, his team was able to obtain samples of biological materials in the colony in Kharp and send them for analysis to foreign laboratories, as reported by Yulia Navalnaya.

In a joint statement from the countries conducting the investigation, it is stated that Navalny died in custody, and that the Russian authorities "had the means, motives, and opportunity" to use the poison. It was also reported that the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has been notified of a possible violation of the Convention.
The Russian authorities have previously denied any involvement in the politician's death.
