Zelensky stated that Ukraine will hold elections if given two months of truce

“If we are given two months of truce, we are ready to organize elections,” the president noted. He emphasized that security and time for preparation are necessary for this, adding: “We need many days.”

Zelensky pointed out that the U.S. could achieve a truce by pressuring Russia: “Press Putin to reach a ceasefire. Then our parliament will change the legislation, and we will hold elections if they are necessary.” He also mentioned that if elections are needed by both Americans and Russians, Ukraine is open to discussion.

Additionally, Zelensky proposed the possibility of declaring a “truce for the Russians,” provided that honest elections are held in Russia in response.

It should be noted that according to Ukrainian legislation, presidential and parliamentary elections cannot be held during martial law. Due to military actions by Russia, elections did not take place within the scheduled time.

In December 2025, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, stated in the context of peace negotiations that it was time to organize elections in Ukraine. In response, Zelensky expressed readiness to hold elections within 60-90 days if the U.S. and Europe provide the necessary security conditions.

February information from the Financial Times, citing its sources, indicates that Zelensky intends to announce presidential elections and a referendum on the fourth anniversary of the conflict with Russia — February 24. At the same time, the President of Ukraine stated that he is hearing about this for the first time.
