
The prosecutor previously requested a life sentence for Vardanyan.
The court found him guilty on several counts of the Criminal Code of Azerbaijan. The charges included planning an aggressive war, deportation and forced relocation of people, persecution, illegal detention, torture, mercenarism, violation of the laws and customs of war, terrorism, financing terrorism, creating a criminal group, illegal arms trafficking, threats to aviation security, violent seizure of power, and illegal border crossing.
It should be noted that the criminal case against Vardanyan involves serious charges related to crimes against humanity, war crimes, and terrorism.
In September 2023, Azerbaijan conducted a military operation in the territory of the Republic of Nagorno-Karabakh, during which armed formations were disarmed, and some former leaders of the region, including Vardanyan, were detained.
