The court proceedings established that the incident occurred in January 2025 during fighting in the Kursk region. According to the case materials, Ivanov and other Russian servicemen organized an ambush, and when two Ukrainian soldiers raised their hands intending to surrender, Ivanov opened fire on them.
At the court hearings, witnesses, former comrades-in-arms of Ivanov, claimed that he acted on the orders of his commander. However, the court concluded that there was no necessity for the use of force, and Ivanov understood that the order was criminal and could have refused to carry it out.
The actions of the serviceman were classified as "violation of the laws and customs of war, committed by a group of individuals, resulting in the death of persons protected by international humanitarian law."
Additionally, the court partially satisfied the civil claim, obliging Ivanov to pay 50 million hryvnias as compensation to the spouse of one of the deceased.
