The strategy of 'using Taiwan to contain China' is doomed to fail

In an interview with the publication "Evening Bishkek", Liu Jiangping, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of China to Kyrgyzstan, discussed the escalation of the situation in the Taiwan Strait, the "red lines" in relations with the United States, as well as the support that China receives from various countries, including Kyrgyzstan, in defending its national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

How do you assess the position of the international community on the Taiwan issue? Most countries recognize the "one China" policy, including Central Asian states.

- Taiwan has always been an integral part of China. This is confirmed by historical and legal facts reflected in international documents such as the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations, the Act of Japan's Surrender, and UN General Assembly Resolution 2758. The "one China" principle, which implies that Taiwan is part of China and that the PRC is the only legitimate representative of the whole country, has long been recognized by the international community as a fundamental norm in international relations.

The status quo in the Taiwan Strait is that both sides belong to one China. The greatest threat to peace and stability there comes from the separatist actions of supporters of "Taiwan independence," as well as external support for these actions. I want to emphasize that the pursuit of "independence" for Taiwan means a split in China, and supporting such aspirations violates both the Constitution of the PRC and international law.

China will continue to defend its national sovereignty and territorial integrity. After announcing countermeasures and conducting military exercises, several dozen countries, including Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Belarus, expressed support for China, reaffirming their commitment to the "one China" principle. We appreciate this stable support.

Recently, the U.S. approved a large-scale arms sale plan to Taiwan worth over $11.1 billion. How do you comment on this?

- The Taiwan issue is a key interest of China and the first red line in relations with the U.S. The "one China" principle is the foundation of Sino-American relations, and any actions that violate this principle are unacceptable. In the Joint Communiqué of August 17, 1982, the U.S. stated its intention not to increase arms sales to Taiwan, which has not been fulfilled in practice. On the contrary, the volume of supplies has only increased, including modern types of weapons. The latest arms sale plan to Taiwan has set a new record and seriously violates the "one China" principle, undermines China's sovereignty, and sends dangerous signals to separatists.

The U.S. strategy of "keeping China in check through Taiwan" is doomed to fail. We urge the U.S. to adhere to the "one China" principle and cease dangerous actions that undermine peace in the Taiwan Strait.

The military exercises "Fair Mission 2025," initiated by the PLA around Taiwan, have attracted attention. What is their purpose?

- These exercises are a necessary response to the attempts of Taiwanese separatists to achieve independence and a measure to protect China's national sovereignty. It is important to note two points.

First, the authorities of the Democratic Progressive Party, by promoting "Taiwan independence" with external support, are making Taiwan a place of tension and instability. This threatens the security of the region and jeopardizes the interests of the Taiwanese people.

Second, external attempts to "use Taiwan to contain China" only increase the ambitions of separatists and can lead to armed conflict. China will consistently defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, and any provocations on this issue will receive a decisive response.

How did China react to the recent statements by the Japanese Prime Minister regarding Taiwan?

- Taiwan is a part of China, and its issue is not subject to external interference. Japan and China signed a Joint Statement in 1972, in which Japan recognized the PRC as the only legitimate government. However, the recent statements by the Japanese Prime Minister linking "Japan's survival" to the Taiwan issue raise serious concerns and violate the "one China" principle. This is an unacceptable interference in China's affairs and an open challenge to the post-war world order.

China has always advocated for peace, but will not make concessions on sovereignty issues. We urge Japan to strictly adhere to the agreed principles and respect international obligations.

In your opinion, how should the international community protect the post-war world order while marking the 80th anniversary of Victory over Fascism?

- China and the Soviet Union played a key role in the victory over militaristic Japan and Nazi Germany. Important events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of Victory took place in both Kyrgyzstan and China, aimed at honoring the memory of the fallen and preserving peace. History is a good lesson for future generations. It is important to uphold the correct understanding of World War II and counter attempts to distort it, supporting an international order based on law.

China is ready to work with Kyrgyzstan and other countries to ensure peace and development, implementing the global development and security initiatives proposed by the Chairman of the PRC, Xi Jinping.

I congratulate the readers of "Evening Bishkek" on the upcoming New Year! I wish health, happiness, and prosperity to our countries, and peace and harmony to the world.
