Moscow is Hit by One of the Most Powerful Snowfalls in 146 Years

On January 9, a snowfall occurred in Moscow, which ranked fifth in strength in the history of meteorological observations. This was reported by the press service of the Hydrometeorological Center of Russia.

According to data from the VDNH meteorological station, 21.4 mm of precipitation fell in Moscow over the course of a day, which is about 40% of the monthly norm. During the winter period, stronger snowfalls have been recorded only a few times: on February 4, 2018 (24.2 mm), December 14, 1981 (23.2 mm), January 8, 1970 (23.0 mm), and December 12, 2022 (22.6 mm).

After this snowfall, the snow cover in Moscow reached a thickness of 30 to 38 cm, while in the Moscow region it reached 51 cm, particularly at the Cherusti meteorological station.

Experts from the Hydrometeorological Center noted that over 146 years of observations, 24 cases of snowfalls with precipitation exceeding 15 mm have been registered in Moscow during the winter period. On average, such heavy snowfalls occur once every five to six years.
