Greenland was under Danish colonial rule until 1953 and gained autonomy in 2009 while retaining its status as part of the kingdom. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously expressed a desire to gain control over Greenland, citing the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the region. In turn, the Danish armed forces have denied any claims of a potential threat from Russia or China.
