Kyrgyzstan is preparing to implement a significant strategic project aimed at addressing the shortage of irrigation water. Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Minister of Water Resources, announced the completion of negotiations with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) regarding the modernization of the Large Chui Canal (BChK).
The project, which costs 37 million euros, is aimed at lining the bed of the western branch of the BChK with concrete. Currently, the situation is critical: due to outdated canal structures and an earthen bed, water losses during transportation reach 50–55%. This means that almost half of the resource is lost to the ground, failing to reach farmers' fields.
Concrete lining will address several key issues. First of all, it will virtually eliminate leaks, ensuring reliable irrigation of agricultural lands in the Chui region. Additionally, the project will prevent water from filtering into the ground, allowing for the drainage of extensive marshy areas in the lower zone of the canal that have long been unsuitable for use.
The drained areas will create opportunities for active land development: horticulture is planned to be developed here, these plots will be involved in agricultural circulation, and areas will be allocated for housing construction. The implementation of the project could serve as an impetus for the emergence of new settlements and the expansion of existing villages near the canal. Currently, relevant agencies are working on the final agreement to commence work.
