Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry Bakyt Torobaev announced the preparation of an important project aimed at preventing the shortage of irrigation water in Kyrgyzstan.
According to him, negotiations with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development on financing the concreting of the water supply canal of the Western branch of the Second Big Chui Canal (BChK) have been completed. A corresponding agreement is currently being prepared.
The cost of the project is 37 million euros.
“Water losses during delivery through the BChK reach 50–55 percent. Concreting the canals will significantly reduce these losses and improve water supply for irrigating agricultural lands. Moreover, this measure will prevent water from filtering into the soil and moving through underground layers, which will help drain marshy areas at the lower part of the canal,” the minister noted. This will create new opportunities for utilizing these lands in agriculture, developing horticulture, and preparing areas for construction, as well as for establishing new settlements near existing ones.
