In the agricultural sector of Kyrgyzstan, issues related to irrigation occupy a central place in the development process. This was reported by the First Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, Zhanibek Kerimaliev, in an interview on the radio.

In his opinion, water plays a critical role not only in agriculture but also in other areas; however, in agricultural production, it is as significant as climatic conditions. In this regard, a program has been developed that covers five key areas, with a focus on irrigation and providing the population with clean water.

Kerimaliev noted that a number of significant projects are being implemented in the field of irrigation, and noticeable changes are occurring after the reforms have been carried out. He emphasized that successful development of irrigation requires cooperation not only from the ministry but also from farmers, local specialists, and government authorities.

“Agricultural issues receive significant attention from the president and the Cabinet of Ministers, which is reflected in substantial funding. Thus, significant resources are allocated for the development of the irrigation system and the provision of drinking water,” he added.

According to the First Deputy Minister, as part of irrigation works, many channels have been restored by 2025. The construction of 106 facilities has been completed, work is ongoing on 11, and project documentation has been prepared for 24 facilities.

He clarified that inter-farm channels are registered with the ministry, while internal channels previously belonged to local authorities. During the process of inventory and documentation, the rural administrations will be able to transfer these channels for technical maintenance to the Ministry of Agriculture.

In total, according to him, over 550 kilometers of channels have been repaired, and work is being carried out to repair hydroposts. All these activities are funded by the Water Resources Service.

Additionally, in 2025, 43 water intake wells that had not been serviced for a long time were restored.

Kerimaliev also reported on the launch of concrete mat production for channel lining. The new plant has already been put into operation, and by 2025, 342,000 square meters of channels have been lined. This material, which hardens upon contact with water, is comparable in characteristics to cement and does not require additional concrete pouring.

This technology was first tested in the Chui region and then implemented in all regions of the country, which will help reduce water losses, which remain one of the main problems due to the large number of earthen channels.

Together with the rural administrations and water user associations, 118 abandoned irrigation facilities have been identified. Currently, work is underway to formalize and transfer them to state ownership. A total of 33 pumping stations, 36 wells, and 20 facilities of BSR and BDR have already been transferred to state balance.
