In Kyrgyzstan, dependence on imported vegetable oil is decreasing

In 2025, five new oilseed processing plants were launched in the country

According to the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture, the steps taken in the area of import substitution for vegetable oil are beginning to yield noticeable results. By the end of 2024, the level of self-sufficiency in the domestic market increased from 20.2% in 2022 to 50% thanks to domestic production.

The growth of these indicators became possible due to the increase in production capacities. In 2025, five new oilseed processing plants started operating in the republic: one in the Issyk-Kul region, two in the Naryn region, and one each in the Talas and Chui regions. According to data from the National Statistical Committee, there are currently 9 large and 136 small plants operating in the country engaged in oilseed processing, as stated in the press release.

According to the press service, approximately 18,500 tons of vegetable oil were produced in Kyrgyzstan during the 11-month period of 2025. The level of self-sufficiency due to domestic production was 56.5%.

The Ministry of Agriculture also reports on efforts to improve the yield of oilseed crops. New high-yield varieties brought from the USA, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Turkey are being tested in the republic.
