Elon Musk became the first person in history whose net worth exceeded $800 billion

Before the merger, Musk owned approximately 42% of SpaceX shares, which were valued at $336 billion, based on a recent tender offer that set the company's value at $800 billion. Additionally, he held about 49% of xAI shares, valued at $122 billion, according to a recent funding round that valued the company at $250 billion. After the merger, which valued SpaceX at $1 trillion and xAI at $250 billion, Forbes reports that Musk now owns 43% of the new company, which is valued at $542 billion.

SpaceX is now Musk's most important asset. He also owns 12% of Tesla shares, valued at $178 billion, and Tesla stock options worth $124 billion. This amount does not include the impressive compensation package approved by Tesla shareholders in November, which could earn Musk up to $1 trillion in additional shares if Tesla meets ambitious plans to increase its market capitalization more than eightfold over the next decade.

This is already Musk's second merger of companies in less than a year. In March of last year, he announced the merger of xAI with the social network X (formerly Twitter), valuing xAI at $80 billion and X at $33 billion. Questions arise about the credibility of the stated valuations due to Musk's role as both buyer and seller in these deals. Nevertheless, given that all these companies have now become part of SpaceX, it will be important to observe how they are valued in the public market after the anticipated IPO.

In just four months, Musk's net worth has reached several historic milestones. In October, he became the first person whose net worth was estimated at $500 billion when Tesla shares surged after his departure from the Department of Efficiency of Government Management (DOGE) under the Trump administration. On December 15, he became the first to have a net worth estimated at $600 billion when private investors valued SpaceX at $800 billion, increasing its value from $400 billion in August. Four days later, he broke the record again, becoming the first person whose net worth reached $700 billion after the Delaware Supreme Court reinstated his Tesla shares.

Musk's current net worth of $578 billion significantly exceeds that of the second richest person on the planet, Google co-founder Larry Page, whose net worth is $281 billion. This means Musk is only about half a billion dollars away from becoming the world's first trillionaire.
