The Ministry of Health of Kazakhstan has strengthened border control and prepared medical institutions for the possible detection of the Nipah virus, as reported by Ulysmedia.kz.
Currently, there have been no reported cases of Nipah virus infection in Kazakhstan, which was detected in India. However, border control has been intensified, especially for travelers from Southeast Asian countries. Medications and personal protective equipment have already been prepared in infectious disease hospitals. The Ministry of Health noted that the Nipah virus can be transmitted through animals, such as bats and pigs, as well as from person to person or through contaminated food and drinks.
— Symptoms of the disease may include high fever, headaches, and general weakness, and in severe cases, there may be damage to the central nervous system and the development of pneumonia, — the agency warns.
Kazakhstani citizens planning trips to India or other countries in the region are advised to take precautions and seek medical help immediately at the first signs of illness. Currently, there is no vaccine against this virus.
Previously, emergency measures were implemented in the Indian state of West Bengal after the detection of the Nipah virus. Medical workers warn of the high mortality rate from this disease, which can reach 75%.
State authorities confirmed five cases of Nipah virus infection and quarantined about 100 people who had contact with the infected, reports The Independent.
According to the publication, among the infected are medical workers. In Kolkata, the virus was found in two nurses who are in critical condition. This information was confirmed by a senior official from the state health department. Infection has also been recorded in a doctor and another hospital staff member, raising concerns among authorities about the hospital transmission of the infection.
