According to a study published in the journal "Healthcare of Kyrgyzstan," patients suffering from oncological diseases remain at significant risk for both severe and critical courses of COVID-19. The likelihood of a fatal outcome is particularly high for those who have only one lung.

The paper emphasizes that the approach to treating such patients should be based on the results of thorough examinations and include staged, yet prompt measures that align with modern clinical protocols.

The authors of the study described two cases of patients who underwent radical surgery to remove a lung due to cancer and have been in long-term remission. Both patients underwent pneumonectomy in 2014 and were hospitalized in 2024 in serious condition, with confirmed coronavirus infection.

Despite the challenging circumstances and severity of their condition, both patients were able to emerge from the critical situation, which, according to doctors, was made possible by timely and effective treatment conducted in accordance with current clinical guidelines.

Specialists emphasize that although the COVID-19 pandemic is officially over, the risk of infection remains, especially among groups with a high level of vulnerability. Patients with a single lung fall into the category of extremely high risk and a high probability of fatal outcomes.

Doctors also highlight the importance of mandatory COVID-19 testing at the first signs of possible lung involvement in such patients, which can critically influence the prevention of serious complications and improve treatment outcomes.
