Doctors from the Bishkek Health Strengthening Center have addressed the citizens of Kyrgyzstan with recommendations for preventing infection with influenza and ARVI.
Influenza is an acute infectious disease of the respiratory tract caused by the influenza virus and falls into the category of acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI). It can manifest in both mild and severe forms, sometimes leading to serious complications.
“Transmission of ARVI primarily occurs through airborne droplets — via coughing, sneezing, and even during conversation. The virus can enter the body through objects used by many people: door handles, railings, phones, money, and so on, as well as through hands that we use to cover our mouth and nose.
In most cases, influenza lasts several days; however, in some situations, it can be severe, which is especially dangerous for people with chronic diseases, as their condition may worsen during this period, increasing the risk of complications,” the statement notes.
To reduce the risk of infection with influenza and ARVI during periods of increased morbidity, it is recommended to:
- avoid crowded places and contact with sick individuals;
- lead a healthy lifestyle: exercise more, eat a balanced diet, quit smoking and alcohol;
- avoid getting chilled;
- maintain a work and rest schedule;
- spend more time outdoors;
- regularly ventilate rooms and conduct wet cleaning;
- maintain personal hygiene: wash hands, use antiseptics, wear masks;
- cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing with a tissue or elbow;
- include foods rich in vitamin C in your diet;
- ensure adequate fluid intake;
- get vaccinated against influenza.
- stay at home and do not visit public places;
- isolate the sick person from other family members, especially from children, pregnant women, and the elderly;
- consult a doctor and strictly follow their instructions.
