On the eve of the New Year, a doctor reminded about the dangers of combining alcohol and medications

With the arrival of the New Year, therapist Nargilya Chomokeeva from the Family Medicine Center No. 8 strongly urges caution regarding the combination of alcohol and medications. She emphasizes that consuming alcohol with certain medications can pose a serious threat to health.

According to Chomokeeva, there is no safe dose of alcohol, and for people living in Asian countries, the risk from consumption significantly increases due to physiological characteristics. In particular, individuals of Mongoloid descent have a low level of the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which is responsible for processing alcohol in the body.

The specialist pointed out the particular danger associated with the combination of alcohol and psychiatric medications. “Mixing antidepressants and sleeping pills, such as clonazepam, with alcohol is absolutely unacceptable,” the doctor stated.

Antibiotics are also in the risk group. Chomokeeva noted that studies on the compatibility of antibiotics with alcohol have not been conducted for all medications. The most studied are penicillin group antibiotics, such as amoxicillin and ampicillin, but even for them, there is no conclusive data on the safety of their combination with alcohol.

“From a medical standpoint, it is better to avoid consuming alcohol along with antibiotics, even if there is no clear evidence of serious consequences,” the therapist added.

The doctor also focused on medications containing paracetamol. She warned that this substance has hepatotoxic effects, and exceeding the recommended dose in combination with alcohol can cause serious liver damage.

“With an overdose and alcohol consumption, there is a risk of toxic hepatitis. Liver cirrhosis may not develop instantly, but such a threat exists,” Chomokeeva explained.

In conclusion, the doctor emphasized the importance of adhering to the dosage of any medications and completely refraining from alcohol to prevent complications and negative health consequences.
