As a result of genetic modification of pig organs, the risk of rejection in patients is reduced. Experts emphasize that this opens new horizons for medicine.
According to the publication, the first transplant of pig kidneys has already been carried out as part of clinical trials, with the next one scheduled for January. During these trials, six patients will receive organs whose genomes have been edited at ten sites to minimize the likelihood of rejection. If the FDA gives the green light to expand the trials, another 44 people will be able to undergo a similar procedure.
