Wastewater treatment facilities remain one of the key issues, especially in the context of a growing population. According to the head of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Meder Mashiev, in an interview with AKIpress, the increase in the number of residents in large settlements leads to a rise in consumption, while the treatment facilities remain unchanged.

The minister noted that many treatment facilities in small towns were built back in the Soviet era.

In the fourth quarter of 2025, the Ministry of Natural Resources established an interdepartmental working group that monitors the condition of wastewater treatment facilities in large settlements, including about 40 facilities.

“In some towns of district significance, the situation is even more complex. Problems arise due to various types of pollution caused by wastewater discharges. Next year, we intend to present a concept for improving this system to the Cabinet of Ministers. This monitoring is a directive from the head of the Cabinet, and we plan to present our proposals in early 2026, around January-February,” the minister reported.

Meder Mashiev added that the Ministry of Natural Resources is counting on funding for the modernization of wastewater treatment facilities from the Cabinet of Ministers. “Based on the results of our group's work, we will appeal to the government, partners, and international financial institutions for the necessary funds for modernization,” the minister stated.
