According to the Minister of Natural Resources, Meder Mashiev, the shallowing of Lake Issyk-Kul has a cyclical nature. One cycle lasts 330 years, and in the 1960s and 70s, the water level reached its peak, after which it began to decline. The head of the Ministry of Natural Resources reported this in an interview with AKIpress.

The minister noted that this process is controllable, although some changes are observed.

“This year we developed and approved a concept aimed at the development of the ecological and economic systems of Issyk-Kul. As part of the implementation of this concept, it is necessary to create an action plan. We are conducting various studies and within the framework of this concept, we plan to approve the regulations for studying Issyk-Kul, as well as protocols for observing and monitoring the condition of the lake, including hydrophysical and hydrochemical parameters, as well as microbiological aspects,” he said.

Mashiev also reported that his department collaborates with various international organizations. Recently, an expedition was conducted by the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and prior to that, an expedition from Leipzig University in Germany.

“We are interested in participating in such studies and plan to develop a unified regulation. Previously, government agencies did not have a common monitoring system for the condition of Issyk-Kul: the Ministry of Emergency Situations conducted its observations, the Ministry of Agriculture had its own, and we had ours. Now we aim to combine all efforts and conduct a comprehensive study. Currently, measures are being taken to implement a monitoring system,” the minister concluded.
