Nasvai, also known as nasibai, nas, nats, nose, ice, or shpak, is a type of non-smoking tobacco product prevalent in Central Asia. The main ingredients of this product are tobacco and alkali, and vegetable oil and various spices may also be added to enhance the flavor.

Umut Sherik kyzy, an employee of the inter-district center for sanitary and epidemiological supervision in the At-Bashinsky district, spoke about the potential dangers of nasvai.

She explained that "nasvai is made from tobacco seeds using smokeless tobacco additives. Since it contains tobacco, this can lead to nicotine addiction. Additionally, its use is associated with the risk of gastrointestinal diseases, oral cancer, and dental diseases.

Some believe that nasvai is less harmful than cigarettes, as the latter are produced in factories under clean conditions, while nasvai is made by hand. The process involves using a special device to process tobacco seeds, which are then sifted to separate fine particles. The resulting mixture is sprinkled with lime and placed in a bag for 1-2 hours to activate. However, various substances can be added to nasvai, such as tobacco, lime, ash, glue, and water. If the preparation process is conducted by a person with hepatitis, this can lead to infection," she noted.

Furthermore, Umut Sherik kyzy added that the consumption of nasvai can negatively affect the nervous system.

"Nasvai itself is a complex chemical substance, with more than 50% consisting of tobacco. The main psychoactive substance is the alkaloid nicotine, which causes both physical and psychological dependence. Over time, such dependence can lead to serious health problems. The use of nasvai can lead to relaxation and euphoria, but it also causes increased blood pressure and a rapid heartbeat. Blood vessels become thinner, and the brain receives less oxygen, disrupting its functioning, which leads to memory deterioration and increased irritability," she claims.

Umut Sherik kyzy also emphasized that nasvai can be a cause of children being born with diseases.

"The product causes burns to the mucous membrane, the formation of ulcers, and oral cancer. The lime in its composition can damage the mucosa, leading to the destruction of tooth enamel and premature tooth loss. Sensitivity of taste buds also decreases, which over time can lead to a loss of taste. People who consume nasvai may experience excessive salivation. In men, sperm production may also be disrupted, which in turn leads to infertility and increases the risk of giving birth to children with disabilities. Therefore, it is important to recognize the seriousness of this product and consider the future of healthy offspring," she concluded.
