DUMK will introduce a 9% commission for pilgrims

Imams will receive a salary increase thanks to the new commission

The Spiritual Administration of Muslims of Kyrgyzstan has announced the introduction of a 9% commission for citizens wishing to perform Umrah. This decision resulted from discussions with the community and is aimed at increasing the salaries of imams, according to information from DUMK.

The Muftiate noted that the issue of financing religious institutions was raised at the People's Kurultai in December 2024. However, the secular nature of the state does not allow for budgetary funds to be allocated for these needs. Therefore, DUMK decided to seek funding from external sources but ultimately chose to form a fund from internal resources.

Clerics pointed out that in most regions, except for Bishkek and Osh, mainly elderly imams work, many of whom have been serving without pay for many years. Young people are not eager to move to villages due to low salary levels. The Muftiate believes that the introduction of a commission from pilgrims will create opportunities to attract qualified and energetic imams.

The proposal has already been sent to the Council of Ulema for assessment of its compliance with Sharia norms.
