In the Batken region, a project has been implemented to create 7 artificial glaciers in response to the problem of water resource scarcity.
According to the press service of the presidential representative, the glaciers were installed in villages such as Gaz, Sogment, Bulak-Bashy, Kayindy, Aibiyke, Kok-Tash, and Sumbula.
At a meeting led by local authorities, including Azizbek Adylbekov, with an international delegation consisting of the Consul General of Russia in Osh, Roman Svistina, and representatives from FAO and OSCE, issues related to the application of climate-resilient technologies, water resource management, and improvement of irrigation systems were discussed. As a result of the meeting, a decision was made to extend the experience of creating glaciers to other areas of the region.
The delegates also visited the Ayna-Tash gorge in the village of Sumbula, where they inspected an operational glacier and assessed water reserves. The technology used allows for the accumulation of water during the winter period for subsequent irrigation of agricultural lands in the dry spring and summer months.
As of the end of winter, the glaciers in the region managed to accumulate more than 1.5 million cubic meters of water.
This project, implemented with the support of international partners, contributes to stable irrigation for local farmers and supports economic development amid climate change.
