Iskender Ryskulov was born on June 30, 1941, in Frunze. He was a theater director and a People's Artist of the Kyrgyz SSR.
Since 1984, he served as the chief director of the Kyrgyz State Drama Theater.
According to Yuldash Nurmatov, who collaborated with Ryskulov for a long time, he "revolutionized Kyrgyz theater." The "Encyclopedia of Modern Theatre" mentions that his first work at the Frunze theater—a staging of Chinghiz Aitmatov's novella "Farewell, Gulsary!"—was criticized for its unusual artistic design but was noted for its high metaphorical quality and boldness.
Meanwhile, foreign critics were thrilled with Iskender Ryskulov's works and invited him to stage productions based on Aitmatov's works.
He passed away on December 26, 2002.
