"What kind of inferiority complex is this?"
During a conversation with the BBC, Syimyk Zhapikeev expressed his opinion regarding the outrage caused by his comments about the "five-kopeck stories" of Chingiz Aitmatov.
He noted that he did not intend to offend the writer, but merely shared his perspective on his work.
“What bad thing did I say about Chingiz Aitmatov? I did not attack his personality or call him a bad person. If I don't like his work, what can be done about it? I mentioned that I read Persian poets like Rumi and Omar Khayyam. I expressed that I am not attracted to Aitmatov's work, and I keep hearing the question: why? One must respect the opinions of others. I did not slander the writer. If I said that I don't like Pushkin or Solzhenitsyn, would there be the same resonance? Is this some kind of inferiority complex?” Zhapikeev wonders.
It is worth noting that in Ernist Kyazov's podcast, Zhapikeev discussed the issues of "mankurtism" in modern society and the work of Chingiz Aitmatov.
He also clarified that he is not interested in Aitmatov and does not want to delve into such topics.
“Chingiz Aitmatov glorified the Soviet Union. Reading his works, one can see: if you are a welder, you will remain one, if you are a doctor - then a doctor. These works do not provide true direction or motivation for development. I have not read the story about the mankurt, but it is not such a significant plot. There are writers who tell much more captivating stories. His tales about the first teacher or the collective farm are five-kopeck stories. They do not inspire anything greater, like, for example, movies with Bruce Lee,” the general added.
These statements caused a wide public resonance, and the Jogorku Kenesh demanded a legal assessment of Zhapikeev's words. The Deputy Minister of Culture also noted that the general needs a psychiatric evaluation.
