Deputy Gulya Kozhokulova proposed to create a separate water authority

At a recent parliamentary session, Kozhokulova emphasized that in the context of current global climate changes, it is extremely important to create a specialized authority with sufficient powers to effectively manage water resources. She noted that issues related to water resources hold a significant place on the global agenda, highlighting the need to separate this area from the jurisdiction of ministries.

Currently, in Kyrgyzstan, water resource management is carried out by the Water Resources Service, which is part of the Ministry of Agriculture. The deputy's initiative aims to elevate the status of this sector, following the example of neighboring countries.

It is worth noting that many countries in Central Asia already have independent ministries dealing with water resources. For example, since 2018, Uzbekistan has had a Ministry of Water Management, and in 2023, Kazakhstan established a Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation. In Turkmenistan, issues related to water resources are overseen by a separate State Committee that reports to the government, while in Tajikistan, these functions are performed by the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources.
