The number of suicides among schoolchildren in Japan has reached a record level

According to preliminary data, in 2025, there were 532 recorded cases of suicides among schoolchildren. The main reasons leading to such tragic decisions were low academic performance, fear for the future, and conflicts with classmates, which accounted for 316 cases. Health problems ranked second in frequency (315 cases), and family difficulties were third (181 cases).

The publication emphasizes that last year the Japanese government took steps to combat child suicides, including increasing the number of school psychologists and developing counseling services through social networks.

In 2024, suicides affected 529 schoolchildren, which is 16 cases more compared to the previous year. In this group, 15 were elementary school students, 163 were from middle school, and 351 were high school students. School-related issues also emerged as the primary factor for suicides among youth under 20, followed by health problems and family circumstances.

The total number of suicides among people of all age groups was 19,097 in 2025, compared to 20,320 cases in 2024.
