In his statement on February 4, Zelensky clarified that out of 55,000 dead, both regular and mobilized, a significant number of people that Ukraine considers missing must also be taken into account.
Earlier, in February 2025, the president had mentioned a figure of 46,000 dead.
Zelensky also emphasized that for Ukraine, the most important priority remains the cessation of hostilities. He expressed hope that peace could be achieved within a year through active diplomatic efforts and negotiations.
At the same time, the president noted that the desire for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict should not be perceived as capitulation or acceptance of Russian demands. He stressed that Moscow's demand for the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the territory of Donbas is a "red line" for Ukraine.
Furthermore, Zelensky added that even a "freezing" of the current positions on the front line would be a "significant concession" for Ukraine; however, he is open to dialogue to preserve the country's independence.
