According to information provided by DW and collected by the consulting company JATO, the German automaker Volkswagen ranked first in the electric vehicle market in Europe by the end of 2025, surpassing Tesla. Last year, Volkswagen managed to sell 274,278 electric vehicles, which is 56% more than in 2024. The main factors for this success were new models, among which the mid-range electric vehicle ID.7 stands out, allowing the group to leave the American Tesla behind, which had previously dominated the European market.
Although exact sales figures for Tesla in Europe for 2025 are not disclosed, JATO points to a 27% decline in the company's sales. Experts attribute this to Elon Musk's deteriorating reputation in Germany and a focus on outdated models for the European buyer.
Nevertheless, the Tesla Model Y remained the best-selling electric vehicle model in Europe in 2025. The second place was taken by the Elroq electric crossover from Skoda, which is also part of the Volkswagen group.
It was previously reported that global electric vehicle sales increased by 20% in 2025 compared to 2024, reaching a record level of 20.7 million units. Of this number, nearly 13 million vehicles were sold in China.
