Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and leader of the "Bangladesh Nationalist Party," passed away at the age of 80. This was reported by the Dhaka Tribune, citing an official statement from the party on social media, as conveyed by RIA Novosti.

In November of last year, Zia was hospitalized in a private clinic due to a chest infection that affected her heart and lungs. In December, her condition worsened, and she was placed on a ventilator.

According to the publication, Khaleda Zia died on Tuesday at 6 a.m.

She became the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of Bangladesh in 1991 and held the position twice: from 1991 to 1996 and then from 2001 to 2006.

The "Bangladesh Nationalist Party" regained its status as one of the leading players in the country's political life after student protests in August of last year led to the fall of the "Awami League" government led by Sheikh Hasina.
