According to Pezeshkian, the new governing body will follow the course set by the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
He noted: "With God's help, the council will continue the path of our dear leader and imam. The armed forces of Iran will continue to strike at the enemy's military targets," said the president.
Pezeshkian emphasized that the U.S. and Israel will not be able to achieve their goals through the assassination of the leader and added that his legacy will be continued. He also called on citizens to take to the streets and mosques to "disrupt the enemies' plans" and pray for their country.
According to available information, Ali Khamenei was killed on February 28 as a result of a joint operation by the U.S. and Israel. His residence in Tehran was attacked during a meeting with the country's top leadership. Several members of Khamenei's family and high-ranking military officials, including representatives of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Defense, also died in the attack. Khamenei had led Iran since 1989. A 40-day mourning period has been declared in the country.
The interim council was formed in accordance with Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution. It consists of the president, the chairman of the Supreme Court, and one member of the Guardian Council. This body will govern the country until a new Supreme Leader is elected, who will be determined by 88 members of the Assembly of Experts.
According to the ILNA agency, former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may have been killed as a result of strikes in the Narmak area of Tehran. No official confirmations of this information have been received so far.
