According to a recent study, a slight reduction in salt content in everyday products can significantly improve cardiovascular health. This has been made possible by analyzing the effects of programs aimed at reducing sodium levels in diets. The results of the study were published in the journal Hypertension (HTN).

Everyday products include bread, ready meals, takeout food, and others.

Modeling showed that even minor changes in the recipes of popular products can lead to a decrease in average blood pressure among the population. Moreover, people will not have to change their habits or consciously limit salt — the positive effect is achieved automatically due to changes in food composition.

Over time, such "invisible" measures can significantly reduce the number of heart attacks and strokes, as well as decrease mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Although the individual benefit may seem minor, on a scale of millions of people, it is significant for public health.

The authors of the study note that gradually reducing salt levels in commercially produced foods is one of the most effective and realistic ways to lessen the burden on the healthcare system and reduce the prevalence of heart disease, without putting pressure on consumers.
