An unexpected danger of drinking water from coolers has been identified

A study conducted by scientists from Loma Linda University has shown that water coolers and vending machines in public places may have a higher level of bacteria than regular tap water. The data was presented in a review of 70 studies published in the journal AIMS Microbiology.

It was found that bacteria can multiply in the nozzles and tubes of water dispensers just a few days after disinfection. This is because tap water contains residual chlorine, which inhibits the growth of microorganisms, while this is absent in vending machine systems.

The authors of the study warn that with insufficient regularity in cleaning and replacing filters, such devices create optimal conditions for the formation of bacterial biofilms. As a result, the quality of water in coolers can reach a level of contamination comparable to tap water, and in some cases even exceed it.

Scientists emphasize the importance of regular and thorough maintenance of vending machines, including disinfection, which should be performed from once a week to once a month depending on usage frequency. Otherwise, a familiar source of "clean" water can become a hidden threat to health.
