Recent studies of tap water in China and the UK have shown alarming results: molecules of ten different perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were found in 99% of samples. This indicates the widespread presence of these substances in the water resources of these countries. Similar analyses of bottled water conducted in fifteen different countries also detected PFAS in 63% of samples, indicating their presence not only in natural water bodies but also in the water supply system used for bottling water.
According to Professor Stuart Harrad, an expert in water ecology, this data highlights the serious level of contamination of water bodies with perfluorinated compounds. He also raises the issue that simple methods, such as boiling or filtration, may effectively remove PFAS from water, emphasizing the importance of applying accessible technologies to reduce the impact of these substances on human health. It is important to note that PFAS have a high capacity for bioaccumulation in the human body, which can lead to their accumulation in tissues and organs. Scientific studies show that these compounds can negatively affect thyroid function, the reproductive system, and increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer. Thus, the issue of water resource contamination with perfluoroalkyl substances requires a comprehensive approach to its resolution, including both technological measures for water purification and further research into their toxicological effects.
