- According to information provided on February 9 by the U.S. Energy Information Administration, electric vehicle sales in the country decreased in 2025, while hybrids continued to gain popularity.

The data was collected by the private consulting company Omdia.

In 2025, hybrid and pure electric vehicles accounted for about 22% of the total number of passenger cars sold in the U.S. Meanwhile, hybrid electric vehicles were able to increase their market share, while sales of battery-powered and plug-in hybrids declined. In the second half of 2025, there was an initial increase in sales of pure electric vehicles; however, they then sharply fell due to the expiration of tax incentives at the end of September.

Different car models have varying impacts on the energy sector. Pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, which can be charged from the electrical grid or autonomous sources, affect the demand for electricity. In contrast, conventional hybrids do not have a charging port and, accordingly, do not influence electricity consumption from the grid.

“In the luxury car segment, there is a particular popularity of battery electric vehicles. In 2025, luxury cars accounted for 14% of the total number of passenger cars in the U.S., and among them, the share of battery electric vehicles reached 23%. The expiration of tax incentives for pure vehicles affected sales of both luxury and mass-market models,” the administration noted.

According to the latest data, in 2024, electric vehicles made up only 2% of all registered passenger cars in the country.

As for Kyrgyzstan, in 2025, over 10,000 electric vehicles were imported from China into the republic. For 2026, Kyrgyzstan received permission for the duty-free import of 15,000 electric vehicles as part of its membership in the EAEU. The basic rate of import customs duty on electric vehicle imports is 15%.
