According to information from the Ministry of Energy, in 2025, 15.4 billion kWh of electricity was generated in Kyrgyzstan.
The following sources stand out among the generated electricity:
- Large hydropower plants — 12.9 billion kWh;
- Small hydropower plants — 0.223 billion kWh;
- Mini-hydropower plants and renewable energy sources (solar and wind power plants) — 0.234 billion kWh;
- Thermal power plants — 2.01 billion kWh.
It is also worth noting that 3.8 billion kWh of electricity was imported from neighboring countries to Kyrgyzstan.
In 2025, several important projects were implemented in the energy sector of the republic, including:
Rehabilitation of the Toktogul Hydropower Plant.
As part of the project "Rehabilitation of the Toktogul Hydropower Plant. Phase No. 3," the rehabilitation of hydro unit No. 3 was completed, which allowed its capacity to be increased by 60 MW. In total, four hydro units were modernized at the Toktogul Hydropower Plant, which ultimately increased the installed capacity to 1,440 MW.
Modernization of the Uch-Kurgan Hydropower Plant.
In 2025, the modernization of the second hydro unit at the Uch-Kurgan Hydropower Plant was completed, adding another 9 MW to its capacity. Previously, in 2024, the first hydro unit was modernized.
Thus, the total capacity of the Uch-Kurgan Hydropower Plant increased by 18 MW, reaching a total of 198 MW. In 2026, the modernization of the remaining two hydro units is planned.
Overall, as a result of the upgrade of the hydro units of large hydropower plants, the installed capacity of the stations was additionally increased by 69 MW in 2025.
