At the eco-council, the progress in improving air quality in Bishkek was discussed, despite ongoing issues, stated Nursultan Tashybekov, the chief specialist of the ecology and urban environment improvement department of the city hall's Department of Municipal Services.

He noted that comprehensive work is being carried out to overcome the smog problem.

Tashybekov pointed to research results indicating that the main source of pollution is coal, followed by road transport, and then industrial enterprises.

According to him, by 2025, complete gasification of 54 out of 105 residential areas is planned, which will allow 52 thousand homes to be connected to natural gas, of which 37 thousand, or 75%, are boiler houses.

“A ban on finely ground coal has been introduced in Bishkek. As a result of inspections by the Municipal Inspection, 31 protocols were drawn up for violations. There are 468 thousand registered vehicles in the city, and the total number of cars, including those arriving, reaches 700 thousand. The renewal of public transport is also of great importance: instead of 3000 diesel buses, there are now 1447 gas buses and 120 electric buses in operation. For cyclists, 47 kilometers of bike paths and 147 charging stations for electric vehicles have been organized in 82 locations. There are currently about 7000 electric vehicles in Bishkek,” he added.

In addition, it is planned to plant 18 thousand trees by 2025, and work is underway to clean riverbeds. An Eco-Technology Plant has also been built, which generates electricity by processing solid household waste.
