According to information from sources, the voice and video calling feature is already being tested on the WhatsApp Web platform. However, at the moment it is only available to a limited number of users in beta. Initially, users will be able to call in personal chats directly from the browser, without the need to install additional software on their PCs.
“The development of this feature took about a year, and during the process, WhatsApp improved it to match the capabilities of desktop applications. At the start, the focus will be on individual chats, allowing users to make calls without installing a desktop client. To do this, simply open the chat and press the call button,” representatives of the publication shared.
Group calls through the browser are still in development.
How the new feature works
- Open a chat in the browser;
- click the call button;
- make calls without installing additional applications.
- all calls are protected by end-to-end encryption, ensuring complete privacy;
- in addition to voice and video calls, there will be an option for screen sharing;
- up to 32 people can participate in one call, and invitation links and the ability to schedule meetings will also be available.
